Hosting the 2010 Summer Olympics, Vancouver found the perfect place for the Olympic Torch to burn bright during the Games. The non-traditional torch burned hot and bright against the mountains in the backdrop.
I arrived back home from some travels just on time for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. A good friend of mine and I went into the City for a fabulous day celebrating Canada and goodwill toward everyone. The streets were electric, the skies blue, the people red and white with Canadian pride, and smiles were a permanent fixture on nearly every face.
The perfectly warm temperatures were great for wandering the vibrant city streets, but a little less than welcome for snow sport enthusiasts!
The permanent Olympic torch is the crowning snapshot on a picture-perfect day in Vancouver.

Nicaragua is full of beautiful scenery and opportunities to learn about the land and waters around and in the country. Made of volcanoes, many of the outdoor activities in the country involve engaging with the mountains and craters. Even kayaking  through Las Isletas  in Lake Nicaragua is an education in the violent  history of the area. The islands are piles of lava rock that blew out of the adjacent Mombacho Volcano. This photo is taken on the  Volcán  Cerro Negro. As the youngest in Nicaragua, this volcano smells of the sulfur vents and the rocks and ash at the top are hot to the touch. The best way to take in this recently formed geographical feature is to climb up to the top to take in the terrific view and "volcano board" down the side. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Beyond the tour, the people posturing for perfect photography, and the nagging desire to constantly tug a shayla (headscarf) tight around my face, it remains impossible to miss the calm and worshipful atmosphere at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Like floating through a manic airport or hearing my footsteps in my empty high school gymnasium, this modern architectural wonder emboldens me to remember how small my individual physical frame is within the the vast gentle grandeur of the structure. The place compels me to humbly turning inward; recognizing how sacred the soul of my being remains as part of God's Creation. A place of Islamic worship, anyone is invited to visit this Mosque. People of all cultures, religions, and geographical locales use the space as a place for quiet reflection. Tambulilid, Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines

Flying. Most everyone seems to appreciate that feeling of loftiness - no strings attached, no obligations to attend to: freedom. Part of the reason I volunteered in the Philippines earlier this year was to lay things aside: a slow-growing business, deadlines, the internet, even friends and family. Of course, we always take some of this with us wherever we go, but now and then, a significant break is warranted. On this particular break, I wanted to fly - to get away, to hop on airplanes around the world, to redistribute my efforts into something physical and tangible. The funny thing is, volunteering is hard work - laborious and exhausting, but so incredibly freeing. I recommend it. Volunteering in a post-disaster area means difficult living conditions, sweat, a little blood, and probably a few tears, too.
